Rubies are one of the most prized gemstones in the world renowned for their rich red colour and extreme hardness. They are graded 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness which is second only to a diamond. They are part of the mineral family known as Corundum.

Where do rubies come from?

The most famous source of rubies comes from the Mogok region in Burma (formerly Myanmar). This region is known for producing high quality deposits with colours described as “pigeon blood” red. Thailand was an important source with their stones visibly more purplish red. Today production is more limited and they are more known for their ruby cutting, treating and trading. The discovery of the Montepuez deposit in Mozambique in 2009 changed the ruby market with huge reserves of high quality rubies. Rubies from this region have a better lustre than those from Burma and Thailand.

Are rubies natural?

Just like with sapphires, rubies are also commonly heat treated to improve colour. This is commonly accepted in the market as standard. Rubies that have not been heated will be specified with a certificate to confirm and are often extremely expensive.

Is ruby jewellery expensive?

While rubies are available at various price points, high-quality rubies are among the most expensive gemstones due to their vibrant colour, clarity, size, origin, and overall rarity. These factors combine to make rubies a luxurious and valuable choice for fine gemstone jewellery.

Why choose ruby jewellery?

Choosing to buy ruby jewellery offers numerous benefits, from their breathtaking beauty and symbolic meanings to their durability and investment potential. Whether for personal enjoyment, a meaningful gift, or an addition to a fine gemstone jewellery collection, rubies stand out as a timeless and valuable gemstone choice.
